The Dictionary of Tattoo Symbols and Their Meanings

 

    It is the tattooist’s job and responsibility to educate the client on the tattoo procedure as well as all aspects of the tattoo, before you get a tattoo. This is so often left out for whatever reason. So I’m doing my part on this little bit of research I’ve done.  Here is a collection of what I have found on tattoo symbols and their meanings. You have to realize that the symbols come from all cultures and mean many things from around the world. If you plan on getting a forever image tattooed in your skin why not take a few moments to research your image. Here is a little help in this direction. You can thank me later

Angel: Protection, guardians, keepers of dreams.

 

Bat: Longevity, happiness, mystery.

 

Bear: Good nature, good luck, also ignorance.

 

Bird: Birth, intuition, freedom.

 

Bull: Fertility, power and strength.

 

Butterfly: Spiritual immortality, temporary element of life.

 

Cat: Linked to magic and bad omens.

 

Centaur: Knowledge and nature, spirit of womanhood.

 

Chain: If broken; freedom. If intact; slavery.

 

Clown: Laughter, tears, uncertainties.

 

Clover: Good luck.

 

Crescent Moon: Transformation and rebirth. Feminine power

 

Cross: Sacrifice, love, and salvation.

 

Crow: Revival, Gods messenger.

 

Devil (baby): Mischievousness, urgent desire for sex.

 

Dog: Man's best friend, loyalty, trustworthiness.

 

Dolphin: Benefactor. The savior's emblem.

 

Dove: Universal symbol of peace.

 

Dragon: Strength, power. Rules over fire and air.

 

Dragonfly: Affinity with the Spiritual Life. Illusion.

 

Eagle: King of birds. Might, spiritual growth.

 

Eye: Self protection. Ever watching!

 

Fairy: Good or evil supernatural powers.

 

Feather:  Creativity, rebirth and spiritual elevation.

 

Fish: Plentifulness, spiritual peace.

 

Frog: Positive symbol of pregnancy.

 

Hawk (tribal): Self-discipline.

 

Heart: Love, provided it is neither bloody nor torn into pieces.

 

Horse: Friend to man, kingship.

 

Leaf: Joy, rebirth.

 

Lion: Might, awareness, immortality, bravery.

 

Lizard: Symbolizes the soul searching for light.

 

Lotus: If open symbolizes the sun, if closed, the moon.

 

Mermaid: Temptation, seduction, materialism.

 

Monkey: Wisdom, knowledge, or evil powers.

 

Moon: Varied rhythms of life.

 

Phoenix: Rebirth.

 

Reaper: Death.

 

Rose: Fertility.

 

Scarab: Strength and rebirth.

 

Skull: Courage, death.

 

Snake: Temptation, knowledge and wisdom.

 

Spider: Creativity.

 

Spider Web: Denial of established order. Beware!

 

Star: Spirit, inspiration, resolution of problems.

 

Sun: Sacredness of life. Warmth, nurturing.

 

Sword: Represents justice, honor, energy.

 

Tiger: Fierceness, strength and power.

 

Turtle: Fertility, long life.

 

Unicorn: Chastity and purity.

 

Wolf: Faithfulness in marriage.

 

Yin Yang:    Harmony and totality.

For some folks the following list may be the most important to know about. So you don’t have to ask, “Did I just get a gang symbol accidentally?” or even worse “Does my college age child have a gang symbol  tattooed on them?” It doesn’t hurt to know the facts.
